WHERE ARE ALL MY 9 TO 5’ers AT!?
So we all agree that being Neurodivergent in the workplace can be hard!
Of course, this depends on the type of role and the organization you’re working in.
I’m currently working in a role that I enjoy as it has all of the aspects I like from a job. It’s fast-paced, I engage with multiple people on a daily basis, it’s challenging so I’m able to put my problem-solving skills to use and I have a supportive team.
BUT this doesn’t mean it’s struggle-free!
You know that analogy of a swan that moves gracefully above water but is ferociously paddling underwater - yeah that’s me!
There are a number of things companies need to address in order to make the workplace more inclusive for Neurodivergent people.
Develop a better understanding of all types of Neurodivergence instead of taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
Provide reasonable adjustments/accommodations during the recruitment stage and in the workplace.
Encourage Neurotypicals in the workplace to be better allies.
In short, companies need to be intentional about moving away from the status quo. This won’t be an overnight job, but they can begin by educating themselves, making changes to workplace practices, and supporting Neurodivergent individuals. I’ll be talking about what companies can do to make the workplace more inclusive for Neurodivergent individuals this Friday 19th November at 1 PM EST.
